There is joy around the table, and Alentejo cuisine—or national cuisine! —though modest in its origins, fills both our stomachs and our souls! From the flavors of childhood memories to sophisticated haute cuisine, it is evident that Mediterranean peoples love to eat, and the table is a social place.
Here at Monte do Ramalho, we follow the rhythms of the countryside, and our culinary offerings are also somewhat seasonal.
With the first warmth of spring come the loquats, delicious and sweet, which can be picked directly from the trees. In late August and September, we look forward to the black figs, the most flavorful, perfect with cured cheese or slices of ham—or even on their own, as they are a delight!
In between, the snail season begins, and summer is generous with tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, creating the freshest flavors in the most delicious gazpachos.
Rosemary sprouts and grows everywhere, all year round, and is part of our seasonings for roasts and grilling, accompanied by the olive oil produced by us, and olives, seasoned and served with pieces of authentic, flavorful bread.
During stays at Monte do Ramalho, our guests enjoy a well-served breakfast, and with prior reservation, they can also have lunch or dinner featuring traditional Alentejo dishes. Vegetarians need not worry, as we have been working on alternative menus, suggesting dishes like pumpkin lasagna or mushroom açorda. Picnics can also be requested and served!
If you visit the village and surrounding areas for lunch, the regional specialties will include wild asparagus migas (when in season), tomato soup, and fish soup, and olives, bread and cheese as starters, always!
An al fresco dinner under the stars and the glow of festive string lights is a memorable experience, and late autumn, with the first chestnuts and comfort food, is also highly recommended.
The classic choice will always be roast pork on a spit for a large group of diners! Imagine a warm, golden late afternoon, the aromas of the fire mingling with the scent of rosemary, olive oil, garlic, and slowly melting fat… it’s mouth-watering, it’s Alentejo cuisine.
If your group is smaller and can’t manage a whole piece, we can switch to a custom barbecue—everything is possible, and we are here to provide you with very appetizing days!
