Summer holidays at Monte do Ramalho

Are you ready for the perfect vacation at Monte do Ramalho?

Summer is here, the nights are warm and starry, sardines and black pork hit the grill, there are a few nice holidays that extend the vacations, and plenty of fun activities to choose from.

It’s impossible not to love this lighter, pleasure-filled season. This month, we’re already indulging in leisure, always an appealing and important topic – and our first suggestion is all about water!

Here at the Monte, we have two pools: a traditional one, with clear water and a blue-tiled bottom, and a natural pool, equally refreshing, filled with native fauna and flora. Farther out on the property, there are two reservoirs where we have canoes if you fancy a paddle.

But we have another fresh invitation: a boat ride on the Maranhão Reservoir, complete with swimming!
Our friendly partners, Além Tejo Eco Tours, are based at the Nautical Club of Avis and offer a range of sustainable leisure activities aboard their electro-solar-powered boat – no fuel consumption, no CO2 emissions, and no noise!

You can choose a daytime tour or a golden sunset cruise, have a family picnic, a romantic outing for two, or enjoy time with friends. They also offer stand-up paddle boarding and even team-building sessions (after the holidays, of course!). With a stunning landscape and contagious tranquility, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Next, it’s time to eat, naturally!

At Monte do Ramalho, we’re finishing up the loquat season and eagerly awaiting the sweet, black figs. Rosemary, olive oil, and marinated olives, along with generous chunks of bread, pair perfectly with barbecues.
You can easily arrange for lunch or dinner (or both) to be delivered to your door or packed for a picnic while you’re here – and you should know you can also gather a group of friends for lunch. We’ll take care of everything!

If you’re out and about, don’t miss the local cuisine, like wild asparagus migas, tomato soup, and dogfish soup – three Alentejo classics and regional delights.
For the more adventurous and those resisting a nap, we suggest a wine tasting at the Abreu Callado Foundation, the most historic and iconic winery in Avis.

After returning to one of the cozy little houses, it’s time to slow down. We recommend two books from two different Saramagos: José and Alfredo.
Two great classics to enjoy under the gentle afternoon shade: Raised from the ground by José Saramago, where generations of the Mau-Tempo family depict five decades of life and class struggle in Alentejo during the dictatorship, and Livro-Guia do Alentejo, de Alfredo Saramago, a historian and gastronome, with photography by Duarte Belo.

Before dinner under the stars, witness the most glorious sunset, slowly casting a golden and pink glow over the landscape.

It’s a magical experience and a privilege we guarantee you’ll enjoy!

Beautiful photography by Madalena Tavares.
